Why Effective Medium Theory Fails in Granular Materials

چکیده
Experimentally it is known that the bulk modulus K and shear modulus m of a granular assembly of elastic spheres increase with pressure p faster than the p1 3 law predicted by effective medium theory (EMT) based on Hertz-Mindlin contact forces. To understand the origin of these discrepancies, we perform numerical simulations of granular aggregates under compression. We show that EMT can describe the moduli pressure dependence if one includes the increasing number of grain-grain contacts with p. Most important, the affine assumption (which underlies EMT), is found to be valid for K p but breaks down seriously for m p .

Experiments on isotropic compression of a granular assembly of spheres show that the shear and bulk moduli vary with the confining pressure faster than the 1/3 power law predicted by Hertz-Mindlin effective medium theories of contact elasticity. Moreover, the ratio between the moduli is found to be larger than the prediction of the elastic theory by a constant value. The understanding of these ...
متن کاملTerahertz scattering by granular composite materials: An effective medium theory
Terahertz (THz) spectroscopy and imaging have emerged as important tools for identification and classification of various substances, which exhibit absorption characteristics at distinct frequencies in the THz range. The spectral fingerprints can potentially be distorted or obscured by electromagnetic scattering caused by the granular nature of some substances. In this paper, we present THz tim...

The linear and nonlinear elastic properties of granular media are analyzed within the context of effective medium theories, as well as with numerical molecular dynamic simulations, assuming the validity of the Hertz-Mindlin theory at the single contact level. Them is a crucial distinction between force laws which are path independent, leading to a hyper-elastic effective medium theory, and thos...

We develop the concept of frequency dependent effective mass, M[over ](omega), of jammed granular materials which occupy a rigid cavity to a filling fraction of 48%, the remaining volume being air of normal room condition or controlled humidity. The dominant features of M[over ](omega) provide signatures of the dissipation of acoustic modes, elasticity, and aging effects in the granular medium....

Thermally-assisted compaction of granular materials is of keen interest in many engineering applications. A proper estimation of the material behavior of compacted granular materials is contingent upon the knowledge of microstructure formation, which is highly dependent on the bulk material properties and processing conditions, during the deformation stage. Originating from the pair interaction...
